About Us
TUTA products are handmade using recycled plastic collected from the streets, beaches, and waterways of Java, Indonesia. The plastic is cleaned, melted down into strands, and handwoven into TUTA designs. A fishing line is woven through the handles for extra strength, making them extremely durable, waterproof, and of course chic.
TUTA began back in 2021 as a creative outlet during Covid (the classic tale). The name is what my family refers to ourselves as (Taylor, Uschi, Tyler, and Alisha) and also happens to sound just like Tüte, a German word for bag.
I design each tote drawing inspiration from my childhood in San Diego, my twenties in New England, and a European upbringing influenced by my German-American roots. The bags are then brought to life by an amazing sister duo in Java, who run a local initiative employing women in their village to help fulfill every order.
After relocating to Munich, Germany, I knew I wanted to keep TUTA going and that brings us here, to the official TUTA website (thanks for your patience as I learn the ropes of running a small business online!). With the help of my parents back in California, I’m able to ship throughout the U.S. and Germany.
